But I find I get a lot further by being polite and persuasive most times.Steve Buttryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07638471876968133906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4350172062816359483.post-90675510205420375532012-06-24T06:08:33.413-05:002012-06-24T06:08:33.413-05:00Ted, I know you are recounting things that actuall...Ted, I know you are recounting things that actually happened because I have seen similar behavior myself on too many occasions. But I'll also note that you are painting with a broad brush. As a reporter for the Des Moines Register and Omaha World-Herald, I was often in the throng of big-city media coming to a distant community for the big story. I also saw -- and engaged in -- professional conduct.

I learned quickly that you couldn't get any scoops running with the pack -- even if you were on the front row. You needed to get away from the pack and find someone others hadn't talked to yet. I also found stories the local media had missed. In one case -- in Marshalltown, Iowa -- I learned that the local authorities had improperly sealed part of the file on a first-degree murder case, unchallenged by local media that were too cozy with the authorities or too lazy. Because a ruling in that case had been appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court, where the full file was available, I was able to break a story the local media had missed. But that was just a reflection on those journalists, not on small-town journalists in general.Steve Buttryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07638471876968133906noreply@blogger.com
